The Bureau of Feed, Seed and Treated Timber regulates the feed, seed and treated timber industries through administration of the Missouri Commercial Feed Law, Missouri Seed Law and Missouri Treated Timber Law. These laws and their corresponding regulations provide statewide food safety and consumer protection benefits.
When contacted with a feed, seed, or treated timber complaint, the Bureau of Feed, Seed & Treated Timber, assigns an Inspector to conduct an investigation of the product. An investigation will be initiated when a signed formal complaint is submitted.
Investigations may include:
1. Taking a signed statement from the complainant concerning the product or incident.
2. Taking a statement from the person(s) responsible for making or distributing the product in question.
3. Collecting documentary evidence and samples of items that prove or disprove violations of the law.
4. Completing laboratory analysis of evidentiary samples.
5. Creating an investigation report documenting evidence related to the product or incident.
Upon completion of all sample analyses, the investigation report will be reviewed to determine if a violation of Missouri law has occurred. A determination is then made as to what action, if any, is to be taken by the Department. The Department may issue a letter of warning or an administrative penalty to the responsible party or the Department may refer the investigation report and evidence to a county prosecutor, the Attorney General?s office or the U.S. Department of Agriculture for action. NOTE: The department does NOT determine liability for any damage or loss, nor does the department order restitution to be paid for damages or losses resulting from the incident.
